Main Overview:

The objective of this project is to equip secondary school computer laboratories (in Akure) and train secondary school students on computer programming to prepare them for future demand in technology and applicable solutions. This will be achieved by creating a funds pool that is publicly transparent and managed.

The training will be planned for a full year in order to allow students to fully grasp the subject and enough to apply to a project in the community (Akure).

At the end, students will be able to create an application to solve a chosen problem in the community.

We will also create a public platform for viewing the progress, contributions and goals of this kind of program, and serve as a case study of the long-term impact of the project on the community.

Project Components:

The following are explanations about the individual components that make up the project. These components are handled by the different partners who have non-profit interest in the project.

Fund Raising:

Funds for this project will be raised by organizing charity events, social campaigns. Charity events include any event such as concerts, special sales, seminars aimed at the public and offering some entertainment or services. It will also introduce and sensitize the public about the project and solicit for pledges and funding for the project. Social campaigns include attempts of publicizing the project using media tools such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. We also hope that some people in the public who have been directly or indirectly influenced by the above channels will give freely without directly soliciting from them. Hence, all information about the project will be publicly available so that anybody can contribute in their own way to the success of the project.

Project Executor:

These are people, or entities, or organizations tasked with the responsibility of carrying out actual setting up and training involved in executing the project. The Tech Supply provides the hardware and software and necessary maintenance needed while the Training supply provides the necessary training for the students.

Public Liaison:

This is an organization (preferable Non-Governmental Organization) who oversees and acts as a face for the project. They will have the following responsibilities:

  1. Survey and decide the secondary school to equip per project.
  2. Create a neutral public fund account where anyone can give to the project
  3. Consider and release necessary funds (in agreement with the Guarantor) each stage of the project.
  4. Relate and liaise with the public on any inquiries and necessary concerns.

Guarantor:

This is an individual who will serve a check on disbursing funds for the project. The guarantor is needed to make sure that every transaction made is transparent and also give a third eye on the direction of the project. In doing this, he will not directly interfere but give recommendations and provide signature when release of funds is necessary.

General Procedure:

The following is the proposed general procedure for the project:

  1. Gather Funds (this is a continuous process)
  2. Choose a secondary school to equip
  3. If funds pool is more than enough for a single school, equip another school
  4. Repeat (this project will ultimately end only when all the public schools in Akure has been fully equipped with a functioning computer laboratory).

Criteria for choosing a school to equip:

While there will be a lot of choices, we offer the following as criteria for choosing a school to equip

  1. Must be a public school
  2. Must be able to provide an existing space for a computer laboratory
  3. Must be chosen randomly if more than one schools are identified

Program modality in the school:

After a school has been identified, the following are the modalities to actually start the program in the chosen school.

  1. Start a computer programming club
  2. Ask students to sign up for the club. Only signed up students will be concerned for full training
  3. Introduce students to the program. The program and what is expected.
  4. Randomly choose 25 students from signed up pool. (We are only planning for 25 students per program batch)
  5. Start program

(Note that no certificates will be awarded for this program as the only evidence for this program is a finished project and measurable impact in the community.

Timeline goals:

We would like to achieve the following in the order listed.

  1. Agreement with public liaison:
    1. Sign agreement of mutual understanding
    2. Appoint guarantor/supervisor
  2. Review and ratify program content and detailed modalities
  3. Create public fund account
  4. Start funding drive
  5. Identify first schoolSet up Project at first school

Ending Note:

Please note that this is not a definitive brief for this project. Since it a public project, it is open to scrutiny and review for much better performance. We believe that if this project is successful, it can be replicated in other cities in Nigeria. Our greatest satisfaction will come from seeing this initiative being applied in other places and thus help to create a great future for our country Nigeria.
